How to install a plugin

Installing a WordPress plugin is one of the easiest ways to add new features and functionality to your website. Plugins can help you add contact forms, improve SEO, enhance security, create galleries, add ecommerce features, improve performance, and much more.

This guide explains the different ways you can install a WordPress plugin, including installing a free plugin from the WordPress dashboard and manually uploading a plugin .zip file.

Before You Install a Plugin

Before installing any plugin, make sure your WordPress website meets the basic requirements and that you have administrator access to the WordPress dashboard.

We recommend checking the following:

  • Make sure you are logged in with an Administrator account.
  • Make sure your WordPress version is compatible with the plugin.
  • Check the plugin’s minimum PHP requirements.
  • Make sure you have downloaded the correct plugin version.
  • If you are installing a premium plugin, make sure you have the plugin .zip file available.
  • Create a backup of your website before installing a major plugin or making significant changes.
  • Check whether the plugin requires a license key or activation after installation.

Method 1: Install a Plugin from the WordPress Dashboard

The easiest way to install a free plugin is directly through the WordPress admin dashboard.

Step 1: Log in to WordPress

First, log in to your WordPress website.

Your WordPress dashboard is usually available at:

Your Website → /wp-admin

Enter your administrator username and password to access the dashboard.

Step 2: Open the Plugins Section

From the WordPress dashboard, navigate to:

Plugins → Add New Plugin

Depending on your WordPress version, you may see Add New or Add New Plugin.

This page allows you to search for plugins available through the WordPress plugin directory.

Step 3: Search for the Plugin

Use the search field at the top of the page to find the plugin you want to install.

For example, if you want to install a contact form plugin, search for:

Contact Form

You can also search using the exact plugin name.

When searching for one of our plugins, enter the plugin name into the search field and check the available results.

Step 4: Check the Plugin Details

Before installing the plugin, review its information carefully.

Check:

  • Plugin name
  • Plugin description
  • Author
  • Rating
  • Active installations
  • Last updated date
  • WordPress compatibility
  • PHP requirements
  • Available features

This helps ensure that you are installing the correct plugin.

Step 5: Click Install Now

Once you have found the correct plugin, click the Install Now button.

WordPress will download the plugin files and install them automatically on your website.

The installation process may take a few moments depending on your hosting server and internet connection.

Step 6: Activate the Plugin

After the installation is completed, the Install Now button will change to Activate.

Click Activate to enable the plugin.

Once activated, the plugin can start adding its functionality to your WordPress website.

Some plugins may create a new menu item in the WordPress dashboard after activation.

Method 2: Install a Plugin Using a ZIP File

If you downloaded a plugin from our website or purchased a premium plugin, you may receive the plugin as a .zip file.

You can install this plugin manually from the WordPress dashboard.

Step 1: Download the Plugin

Download the plugin package from your account or from the plugin download page.

The downloaded file will normally look similar to:

plugin-name.zip

Important: Do not extract the ZIP file before uploading it to WordPress unless the plugin documentation specifically tells you to do so.

Step 2: Open Add New Plugin

Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to:

Plugins → Add New Plugin

At the top of the page, click:

Upload Plugin

Step 3: Choose the ZIP File

Click Choose File and select the plugin .zip file from your computer.

For example:

my-plugin.zip

After selecting the file, click Install Now.

Step 4: Wait for Installation

WordPress will upload the ZIP file to your website and extract the plugin files automatically.

Depending on the size of the plugin and your hosting server, this process may take a few seconds.

Do not close or refresh the page while the installation is in progress.

Step 5: Activate the Plugin

After WordPress successfully installs the plugin, you will see an option to activate it.

Click Activate Plugin.

The plugin is now installed and active on your website.

Method 3: Install a Premium Plugin

Premium plugins are generally provided as downloadable ZIP packages.

After purchasing a premium plugin:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Open your downloads or purchased products section.
  3. Download the plugin ZIP file.
  4. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  5. Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  6. Click Upload Plugin.
  7. Select the downloaded .zip file.
  8. Click Install Now.
  9. Wait for the installation to complete.
  10. Click Activate Plugin.

Some premium plugins may require additional setup after activation.

Plugin License Activation

Certain premium plugins require a valid license key to receive updates, premium features, or support.

After activating the plugin, look for the plugin’s settings or license section.

The location may vary depending on the plugin.

A typical process is:

WordPress Dashboard → Plugin Settings → License

Enter the license key provided with your purchase and click Activate License.

If the license is successfully activated, the plugin may begin receiving automatic updates and other premium benefits.

Note: A plugin can usually be installed without activating a license, but premium functionality, automatic updates, or support may depend on an active license.

What to Do After Installing the Plugin

Installing the plugin is only the first step. After activation, you should configure the plugin according to your requirements.

Open the plugin’s settings page and review the available options.

Depending on the plugin, you may need to configure:

  • General settings
  • Plugin features
  • API keys
  • License information
  • Email settings
  • Display options
  • Security settings
  • User permissions
  • Integration settings
  • Shortcodes
  • Customization options

After making changes, click Save Changes.

How to Check Whether the Plugin Is Active

To check whether your plugin is active:

  1. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
  2. Find the plugin in the list.
  3. Check its current status.

If the plugin is active, you will normally see an option such as Deactivate.

If you see Activate, the plugin is installed but currently inactive.

Common Installation Problems

Sometimes WordPress may display an error while installing a plugin. Below are some common problems and their possible solutions.

1. The ZIP File Could Not Be Installed

If WordPress shows an error while uploading the ZIP file, make sure you have selected the correct plugin package.

Some downloaded packages contain an additional ZIP file inside them.

For example:

plugin-package.zip

may contain:

plugin-name.zip

If this happens, extract the first package and upload the actual plugin ZIP file.

2. Destination Folder Already Exists

You may see an error similar to:

Destination folder already exists.

This usually means that a plugin with the same folder name is already installed.

Go to:

Plugins → Installed Plugins

Check whether the plugin is already installed.

If necessary, deactivate or remove the previous installation before installing the new version.

Always create a backup before replacing an existing plugin.

3. Plugin Installation Failed

A plugin installation can fail because of:

  • Insufficient server resources
  • Incorrect ZIP file
  • File permission problems
  • PHP version incompatibility
  • WordPress version incompatibility
  • Hosting restrictions
  • Incomplete upload
  • Conflicting plugins

Check the plugin requirements and try the installation again.
