The General Settings section is the main configuration area of a WordPress plugin. It allows you to control the basic behavior of the plugin and customize how it works with your website.
Although the available options may differ depending on the plugin, most plugins include a set of general settings that should be reviewed after installation and activation.
Accessing General Settings
After installing and activating the plugin, open your WordPress dashboard.
Depending on the plugin, you can usually find the settings under:
WordPress Dashboard → Plugin Name → Settings
or:
WordPress Dashboard → Settings → Plugin Name
Once you open the settings page, you will see different configuration options organized into sections or tabs.
General Settings Sections
The General Settings page may contain several types of options.
Plugin Status
The plugin status controls whether the main functionality of the plugin is enabled.
Depending on the plugin, you may see options such as:
- Enable Plugin
- Disable Plugin
- Enable Features
- Maintenance Mode
- Debug Mode
Make sure the main plugin functionality is enabled before testing its features.
Basic Configuration
Basic configuration options control the general behavior of the plugin.
These settings may include:
- Default values
- Display options
- Feature preferences
- Default layouts
- Content settings
- User preferences
Choose the options that best match your website requirements.
Display Settings
If the plugin displays content on the frontend, you may find options that control how that content appears.
For example:
- Show or hide plugin elements
- Choose display location
- Select layout
- Set alignment
- Adjust spacing
- Choose button styles
- Configure frontend visibility
After making changes, save the settings and check the frontend of your website.
Enable or Disable Features
Some plugins provide multiple features that can be individually enabled or disabled.
For example:
Feature A — Enabled
Feature B — Enabled
Feature C — Disabled
Disabling features that you do not need can simplify the plugin configuration and may reduce unnecessary functionality.
Only disable a feature if you understand what it does.
